THE MATH, MADE SIMPLE

How much flooring do I need?

Measure each rectangular section of your floor in feet. Multiply length by width, then add the areas together for irregular rooms. This calculator handles one rectangle at a time. Add a waste allowance for cuts, then divide by the coverage printed on the box. Always round up to a whole box.

Boxes = round up [length × width × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per box]

GOOD QUESTIONS

A few things to know.

Does the estimate include installation?

No. The cost covers whole boxes of flooring at the price you enter. Add labor, underlayment, trim, delivery, and tax separately.

What if my room is L-shaped?

Split it into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle’s area, add those areas together, and apply your waste allowance once to the total.

Why round up to whole boxes?

Material is often sold by the box. Rounding up helps avoid a shortage caused by buying only the exact calculated area.
